The Power of Consistency: Building a Cohesive Personal Brand

7 min read,

Building a cohesive personal brand is your path towards standing out and being memorable.

When I was a girl of six, I fell in love with braided pigtails. So, I started wearing them to school day after day. Braided pigtails with blue satin scrunchies. I remember it so well. Nobody really said much. But, as I was soon to find out, everybody noticed.

One day, my scrunchies met the faith that all scrunchies do at one point – they got lost. Thus, I decided to let my hair down.

Oh, boy, did people start talking. What happened to your hair? Is everything okay? You look weird. And, there was the occasional: “I almost didn’t recognize you”.

Consistency As The Key To Building A Cohesive Personal Brand

Of course, the brand you want to build is a bit more sophisticated. But, there is one thing that this story of a six year old girl can teach us.

We all have traits that define us and set us apart. Something we become recognized for.

We all have traits that define us and set us apart. Something we become recognized for.

Braided pigtails with blue satin scrunchies were my defining trait in first grade. I built a personal brand before I even knew what personal branding meant.

Looking back, I understand that it was consistency that led to forming such an image. I could have been wearing any kind of a hairdo, that wouldn’t have mattered. As long as I stuck with it, I would become memorable. It was consistency that made me stand out.

And, it is consistency that can do the same for you.

An Identity Like No One Else’s

Your logo, your color schemes, typography, the types of images you use, you name it… All of those elements play a role in building your identity.

Possibilities are endless. But, whatever you choose, the key is in staying true to those choices. In short, consistent visual branding will result in building an identity like no one else’s. It will result in developing a memorable brand that stands out.

Attraction And Retention Through Consistent Action

In an endless pool of choices, people often rush to the well-known. To something they have seen before and to something they know what to expect of.

Consistency builds loyalty and leads to not only attracting, but also retaining customers.

Thus, consistency can help you be the brand they rush to. Sending consistent messages and taking consistent actions time and again makes you trustworthy. It builds loyalty and leads to not only attracting, but also retaining customers.

A Cohesive Personal Brand Is A Brand To Be Trusted

Going for red in your logo and your website? But then, you feel that the announcement you’re making, either through online or offline channels, could do better with blue?

You’ve adopted a professional tone of voice, but now you’re switching to conversational and humorous?

Well, nobody will stop you. But, know this. That kind of shifting is a sure path towards making people confused. Even suspicious.

You can pride yourself in being spontaneous and even unpredictable in your personal life all you want. Yet, that’s not what you want for your brand.

On the contrary, a cohesive personal brand is a brand to be trusted.

Do what people expect you to do. Be predictable. After all, trust is built on predictability.

A Polished Image And Constant Work For Increased Visibility

Not deviating from your branding style puts together a polished image. Then, the polished image lays the foundation for visibility. Finally, coupling that with regular work on maintaining an active online presence leads to increasing said visibility.

Building loyalty and achieving all of those entrepreneurial goals has to start with something. And, it starts with visibility.

Creating A Cohesive Personal Brand That Stands The Test Of Time: The Art Of Being Consistent

To create a cohesive personal brand that stands the test of time, you have to learn the art of consistency.

It’s not all about the colors of your visuals. Although, they certainly do play a part.

Let’s see what else does.

Defining The Brand

In order to send the messages across, and do so consistently, you first need to know what your brand stands for.

So, think about it. Write down the things that are important for your business. Understand your target audience to define a brand that will align with their values. Research your competition too, but remember that the goal is to create a unique identity.

Then, establish clear and comprehensive branding guidelines to easily maintain consistency. Put it all on paper. And, return to that paper whenever you’re not sure what your next branding move should be.

Making The Visuals Work Together

Logo, colors, typography and images… Back to the basics. Clearly, we can’t ignore the importance of visuals in maintaining consistency.

However, the key is not only in using the same colors and typography in your visuals. You have to make them work together towards the common goal of establishing your brand.

Make the design and the copy fit in with one another. Choose colors that go together. And, add the final touch with a complementing font. Basically, make the elements work together to create visuals that are easy on the eye.

Achieving Unity Across Platforms

Adopting one style on Instagram and another on your website? Evidently, not a good idea.

Your logo, the colors, the content tone and pretty much anything you show to the world should be in alignment. A good branding strategy is the one that achieves unity across platforms.

A good branding strategy is the one that achieves unity across platforms.

And, that goes both for the online and the offline world. Forgetting offline branding strategies is easy in today’s world. But, it is certainly not smart.

Promoting Consistency With A Content Strategy

Not sure what kind of content you want to share on your website or other platforms? Decided to wing it? Once again, not a good idea!

Play upon the power of your blog. Update it regularly, sharing things of value to the audience and in line with your brand.

But, don’t forget social media either. Decide what you’re going to share and how often. Craft a plan and stick to it. After all, developing a great content strategy promotes consistency.

Engaging Regularly To Foster Connection

Nurturing the relationships with your audience leads to customer satisfaction, retention and loyalty.

So, develop a strategy that does more than post content. Actively engage with the audience. Schedule a time to respond to their comments and messages. Simply put, maintain consistent interaction to foster connection and build trust.

Wrapping Up

Developing a cohesive personal brand increases your visibility, fosters relationships and builds trust.

First, define who you are and what you stand for. Then, create visuals that tell the story of your brand and carefully plan the content. Be consistent across all platforms.

And, most of all, find a trait that sets you apart and leverage it. Find your own braided pigtails and make them work for you. Nobody may say much, but everyone is sure to notice.

Develop a strategy that leads to recognition the moment you enter the room, both online and offline.
