Tutorial: How to Record Your Skype Call on Mac, Windows and iPhone/iPad

We have explained why Skype has a business appeal and how professionals use it for their internal and external communication. This service comes in handy for business meetings, tutoring, consults, interviews, and other more formal forms of communication.
With the audio and video forms of communication, it’s natural that you would want to have some kind of it recorded, either as a proof or simply to be able to re-listen to it when you need to. If you wanted to do this some time ago you would really struggle to find third party apps to help you out because Skype itself didn’t provide this option. Luckily for us, some things changed.

Built-in Recording for Skype
As of 2018, Skype has launched a new, built-in feature available for macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, and Skype for the web, that allows its users to record audio and video calls in just a couple of clicks.
With this new update, you can record your calls and play, pause, or fast forward them as you please! Neat, right? 😀
The recording will be available on Skype for 30 days, but you can always save it as an MP4 file, and play it as many times as you would like.
As of 2018, Skype has launched a new, built-in feature available for macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, and Skype for the web, that allows its users to record audio and video calls in just a couple of clicks.
Note that as soon as you hit the record button, everyone taking part in the call is automatically notified that the call is being recorded, so there’s no chance of anyone ending up not-so-pleasantly surprised in the end.
That being said, never record a conversation without informing the other person and getting their consent! In some countries this is illegal, and in all cases, it is just plain rude. There is nothing wrong with wanting to record your conversation, just as long as the other person knows about it.
How Does Skype Recording Work?
Essentially, it’s a very simple process. Let’s go through it in a few basic steps:

Step 1: Start Recording
Once you are on a Skype call, you can start recording any time you like on both mobile and desktop devices. The command “Start Recording” will appear on your screen when you click on the “More options” button located at the bottom of the screen. Once the recording starts, a banner will appear to let everyone know that you are recording the call.

Step 2: Stop Recording
When you want to stop recording, or simply end the call, you can either hang up or press the “+” icon again and choose the “Stop Recording” option. The recording is then automatically processed, finalized, posted on your chat and available on Skype for 30 days. During that period, you can replay it or share it with other people on your contact list.

Step 3: Share the Recording
The process of sharing your call with others is quite simple. All you need to do is select the “Forward” option from the “More options” button and choose people on your contact list you wish to send the recording to.

Step 4: Save the Recording
If you are using Skype on a desktop device: To save a recording just go to your chat, press the “More options” button, and choose the “Save to Downloads” option. If you choose the “Save as” option, you can select the folder you wish to save the recording to.
If you are using Skype on a mobile device: Go to the chat and simply tap and hold the recorder call until you get the menu displayed. Hit the “Save” button and the call will be automatically saved to your camera roll folder.

Third-party Tools
Although Skype has launched its own feature that makes the process of recording calls easy, maybe some of you aren’t so keen on using Microsoft’s VoIP service. That’s quite all right. If you want to give some third-party options a try, there are several different tools you could use depending on your needs.
Windows Users
Even though MP3 Skype Recorder records only audio, not only is it free to use (pro version has some niche options you probably don’t need if you are a regular user) but it gives its users a completely hands-off approach to call recording.
Another handy program is called Evaer. It is easy to use and allows you to record both video and audio calls. However, if you wish to record videos that last longer than 5 minutes, you will have to upgrade to the premium version of the program.
Mac Users
If you have Skype running on your Mac, there are some really good pieces of software you can use. For instance – Piezo. It has a cool vintage design to it and is incredibly simple – there is a red button that just screams (no, not literally) “record“ – and that is exactly what it does. It doesn’t just record your Skype calls but also audio from mostly anything on your Mac. The free version of the program only allows you to record conversations up to 10 minutes – you can record for longer than that, but it will have added noise. The unlimited version of the program costs $19.
You can also try ECamm’s Skype Call Recorder, a tool that produces recordings of the highest quality. This program comes with a really handy feature – multi-track recording – which enables you to split tracks once the call is finished.
iPhone and iPad Users
AceThinker iPhone Screen Recorder app allows you to record a Skype video call by recording your screen activity on your desktop device via AirPlay. This means that, even though the call will take place on your iOS device, it will first be mirrored and then recorded in the Screen Recorder program that you have installed on your computer.
Android Users
If you use Skype for Android, then we suggest you try an amazing free online recorder called Apowersoft Online Screen Recorder. Not only can this tool record your Skype calls, but it can also record all your screen activity in just a few simple steps. The recorded video can then be replayed or shared with other people.
DU Recorder Game Screen Recorder & Video Editor functions in a similar way and enables you to record everything that is going on on your screen, including Skype calls. In addition, this tool even gives you the opportunity to edit your videos once you record them, so make sure to check it out.
Is it Really That Easy?
Yes, it really is.
No matter whether you opt for a Skype’s built-in feature, or decide to give some of the third-party tools a go, it’s never been easier to record a Skype call than it is now. All you need to do is to choose the option that suits you the most and start recording!
