Shortn.me and Tecn.me Will Shorten Your Links, E-mails and Almost Anything Else

4 min read,

A while back we blogged about some of the best URL shorteners out there. Since it’s Friday today, we decided to show you 2 more shorteners which have some rather cool features.

Traditional link shorteners are great just for that – shortening your links. But when you want to shorten or share something like, I don’t know – a code snippet or a piece of text, they fail miserably. Because of that, we give you two great everything-shorteners; shortn.me and tecn.me.

Shortn.me

Shortn.me is a shortener web application which you can use to shorten you URL-s, e-mail addresses, phone numbers and code snippets. It’s still in beta, so if you find a bug, feel free to report it to make the final product even better. The interface is really simple – no ads or anything else that would distract you from doing what you came to do.

Link shortening works the same as with any other similar service. Enter the long URL in the box, press the button and you’ll get the short URL with the option to copy it into your clipboard. If you like numbers, you will also get a character count for both long and short links, accompanied with the percentage describing how much shorter your new link is.

Percentages!

The same goes for e-mail address shortening. Why would you even want to shorten an e-mail address? Well, the most common reason it to preven spam. When you need to give out your e-mail address on Twitter or any other public place (i.e. in blog comments) you would write something like username-at-server.com, right?

There is no for that anymore; just use shorten.me’s e-mail shortening and when somebody clicks on your link, it will open its default e-mail application.

Shortening a phone number is a handy option for sharing phone numbers. You simply need to enter a phone number, preferably in the international format, and shorten it. If you open the link on your computer, you will see the number only, but if you open it on your smartphone, it will start a call with that number. You will have to confirm that you want to call, of course.

Finally, Shortnr.me will help you with sharing a bunch of code or text. Choose to share a Snippet on the homepage, paste it and click the button. Clicking the resulting link will open up the text. You should know that this is not the ultimate solution for code sharing, but it can come in handy. After all, the service is still in beta. Nevertheless, I’d love to see a real code sharing feature in the final version.

Tecn.me

The Tecn.me shortener is actually a free Google Chrome extension. It will give you really short links, often with just one character! To test how tecn.me works, open up Google Chrome and install the extension.

If you need to share a site you’re currently surfing on, just click the tecn.me button in Chrome. You don’t even have to select the address. After you clicked the little cloud icon, the link will automatically be shortened and copied into your clipboard. Simple.

Need to share a photo from a site? Right-click it and choose Shorten Image Link. My personal favorite is sharing of the text from the website. Simply select a portion of text you need to share, right-click and select Shorten Text. Open the shortened link in your browser and the selected text will be placed in a nicely designed post-it.

Text sharing was never this easy

Personally, I can say that Shortn.me and Tecn.me are a pair of very useful tools. Try them out; see if they fit your needs, because they’re the tools that you might find so useful that you’ll ask yourselves how you ever lived without them 😉
