Meet Sabrina: A multidisciplinary .MEr

We’ll start with this: at .ME we are very proud of the work .MErs do and the achievements they make. Recently, we’ve spoken to a .MEr who finds passion and the sense of achievement in many different things. And dare we say, we are in awe of her.

A multidisciplinary approach to work and problem-solving is becoming a norm today. What’s more, individuals that embrace this concept and are able to use skills that were once considered diametrically opposed are those who thrive the most in the fast-evolving world.

One such person is Sabrina Lu from sabrinalu.me who is a great example of a person with an unconventional blend of callings. We talked to Sabrina about her career as an artist, designer, and pre-med student. She also shared her views on why having a personal website matters and the importance of a personal brand.

Opposing career directions

First, we wanted to find out more about Sabrina and what prompted her to choose such opposing career directions. Sabrina Lu is an undergraduate student studying Global Health. She grew up in a very science-oriented family. That’s actually how she came to appreciate the way that science explains how we function and how things work. 

At the same time, Sabrina is naturally inclined towards art. As a matter of fact, she started drawing as soon as she could pick up a pencil. What draws her to the world of art is the way that through art, people can create something new from their minds. They can use it to move others, inspire change, or just to have some fun. 

As far as her pre-med studies and career go, she aspires to become a physician because she wants to do something that would be meaningful for her whole life. Moreover, she wants to do a job that would bring her closer to life, death, and meaning. 

Although she enrolled at the University of Southern California and studies in the field of Global Health, she didn’t want to give up her interest in art. She has been doing creative work in her free time.

Creating a personal website

Naturally, we were eager to find out was why and how she decided to create her personal website. Sabrina told us that this is her very first personal website which looked very different in the beginning.

The minimalist and effective design, high-fidelity images, Sabrina’s design portfolio, detailed presentations of her working process and project results, curated artwork – each of these things is a very important element of any portfolio website.

Speaking of portfolio and work, we wanted to know what prompted Sabrina to create a personal website. Sabrina said that she wanted to have a medium for cataloging and displaying her work. She admitted to having a tendency to disregard what she has done. 

We agree – a portfolio website will help you reach out to a wider audience and also assist you with keeping track of your accomplishments, completed projects, and ultimately progress. Every now and then, we all need to take some time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished. It’s essential as it can help you define new goals or recalibrate them entirely.

This led us to our following question for Sabrina which is how important it is to her to keep her website relevant and up to date. She said that she tries to update her website as soon as she finishes a new project because it’s very important to her to have a clear record of what she is doing and how she can learn and grow from it. 

Defining a personal brand

When you decide to create a personal website, it’s a sure sign that you have an important vision or message that you’d like to share with others. Not only that, but it also means that you’re aware of how things work today. 

Having a personal website is important for any professional no matter their career stage. But, just having a portfolio or personal website doesn’t cut it. You need to define your personal brand and share the story about yourself. 

That’s why we asked Sabrina how she defines her personal brand and how important it is. She said that she thinks her personal brand is unconventional — she has two very different passions and is able to approach one with the perspective of the other, and vice versa. Sarina added that having a personal brand is important because it can make you stand out and be more memorable.

We are curious, so we asked Sabrina how important a personal website is in acquiring clients. She replied that, “The best way to acquire clients is to prove your credibility, and I think the best way to do this is by displaying your work through a personal website.”

Couldn’t have said it better.

Last but not least, we asked Sabrina why she chose .ME as her domain extension. She honestly said that her first reason was that .com was unavailable. Then, she saw the .ME option and thought that it looked clean and also represented the idea of “This is me. This is who I am.” 

So true. Not only does the combination of your name and .ME make your brand unique, but it is also a perfect call to action, ideal for promoting individualism and personal brand, and a secure domain. Last but not the least, it makes you a .MEr!

Final thoughts on this .MEr

Everything is changing so fast today and new challenges demand new ways of doing things. And this new way of doing things requires each of us to embrace all our interests and develop in more directions than one. This is exactly what Sabrina is doing, creating a synergy between art, design, and medicine which enriches her life and gives her a cross-disciplinary approach to solutions.
