Matteo Bertoli Makes Commercials Into An Art Form

The aim of .ME has always been to showcase true value and success that goes with the usage of the world’s most personal domain. We aimed to show you sites that really do make a difference in the world while living on the .ME domain, but today we want to add something new to this mix. .ME the best domain for personal websites, and those personal websites all showcase the best things about their owners in the best possible way. So why wouldn’t we talk about those remarkable individuals too?
Seeing as there’s a gradual shift towards personal websites in the recent months and years, there’s a need to make your website stand out from the sea of other websites, from other brands and people. That can be done by choosing interesting colours or designs, or just making your website completely weird but also brilliant. MatteoBertoli.Me is the personal website of the Italian director and cinematographer Matteo Bertoli. Matteo has really invested a lot of effort into making his site stand out as much as it can and provided us with an extremely pleasant experience while browsing it, while also giving a lot of valuable information about himself and his work.
From Italy To L.A.
Speaking about his work, Matteo’s career spans across multiple countries and even continents. Starting in his hometown of Brescia in Italy as a freelance editor in 2010, Matteo moved to Dublin in 2014 where he shot videos for clients such as Vichy, Twitter, Airbnb, Facebook, Adidas and more. After directing and photographing his first short documentary called Rebirth, that landed him the award for Best Newcomer Filmmaker in Ireland and Best Short Film in Montenegro, Matteo moved to Los Angeles where he currently lives and works. Aside from a pretty impressive career, Matteo owns a production company called RED SKULL MEDIA.
Commercials, With A Great Twist
Matteo’s style is a unique one. Aside from making “regular” commercials with a twist for companies such as McDonald’s and Airbnb, Matteo’s style of shooting commercials is undoubtedly warm and somewhat closer to people, with elements of storytelling that can only be found in documentary films and feature-length movies. It’s this warmth that makes commercials such as Piad’Amore and Pinnochio Barrique Bottle very pleasant to look at. There’s also plenty of outdoor shots and slower, more relaxed atmosphere that really brings out the best of the laid-back Italian lifestyle, especially when it comes to Piad’Amore, a company that makes the traditional Italian flatbread sandwiches.
The style that Matteo can be recognised for is oriented towards a unique art-focused approach even if he’s shooting commercials. This only goes to show that not all commercials need to be boring, “buy it now” shows that do nothing but bother you when you’re watching them, but instead they can really be short movies about a situation in life, not focusing strictly on the product that is being promoted. Of course, a great commercial needs to be beautiful, something Matteo does very well.
An Anamorphic Phone Video? Yes, Please!
Aside from his more commercial works, there’s a number of short films such as Anamorphic San Diego that impressed me greatly. Not only is the movie beautiful, but it was shot entirely using a smartphone, something I’d never have guessed if it wasn’t written below the video. This shows that using a smartphone to film something impressive isn’t impossible if you’re as talented as Matteo, and all you really do need to become a great filmmaker is talent, a good phone, and some editing software. Mind-blowing, I’d say. It’s a great show of the age we’re in, where technology is making all sorts of amazing things possible.
Matteo Bertoli is an extremely talented filmmaker and director, there’s absolutely no doubt about that. From great cinematic-looking commercials to short documentaries and short films shot only on a phone, Matteo’s raw talent is truly shining through his personal website. So if you’re interested in any of these forms, we encourage you to visit his site and admire the relaxing and amazing shots that Matteo provides the world with. Keep up with the good work, Matteo!
