I Know, I Know, I’ve Been There: Empathy Spreads Fast Through The Web
We talk a lot about how personal the .Me domain is, but we are absolutely amazed and baffled at how incredibly personal and wonderful some of the projects under the .Me domains are. One of the most touching ones is I know I know, a song, a project, a movement that went wiral a while ago and is still gathering momentum.
It all started with a singer and a songwriter, Shannon Curtis, and a song about empathy called “I Know I Know.” It’s about listening to someone tell their darkest personal story and deeply, emotionally identifying with them, because you’ve been there too.
I’ve Been There, Too
It’s about really seeing another person, the songwriter explains, and allowing ourselves to be really seen. It’s about finding strength in the powerful connection that comes when we share our most vulnerable selves with a trusted soul.
But she did not come to the idea all by herself – a while ago, one girl shared her story of hurt and healing through a youtube video and a set of cards, to let others know they’re not alone. So Shannon decided to take things further:
So the idea that woke me that night was this: let’s create a platform for more of us to share our stories, to let ourselves be seen, and in doing so to give encouragement to others facing similar struggles.
The next day, I put a call out to my community – my friends and the people who listen to and support the music I make – and I asked them to do something brave with me and contribute their stories to a video project that would carry this message through our stories to everyone who would see it.
What’s Your Story?
Shannon was flooded by the response, and the confessions and tales just kept pouring in, so the project became a living, ongoing platform open for everyone who wants to join the collage and share their experience.
Sharing is caring as they say, and sharing your story can help others feel less alone in their time of trouble. Sometimes all you need to get through the hardest times is for someone who understands and says “I know, I know, I’ve been there too”.
