How to Geek up Your Wedding

4 min read,

You’re a geek. Your significant other is a geek. The question has been popped, the answer was affermative and now you are tying the knot. Congrats from our .Me team! We wish you all the best!

We know wedding planning is stressful and normal tips & tricks might not be good enough for a geeky couple. That’s why we are here to help with several suggestions as to how to geek up your wedding!

Invitations

You will of course call your friends and family to let them know of the upcoming nuptials, but it is customary to send out the invitations. Think about what you or your significant other like and what matters to you and try to personalize your invitations. Do you like Super Mario and you still spend the weekends trying to beat each other’s score? Why not feature that game as a theme of your wedding?

Maybe you are a designer and programmer couple? Were you going to create a wedding website with info on the venue, date & time, menu, etc.? Why not add QR codes to your wedding invitations? Once your guests scan the code, they could visit your wedding website… or maybe even download your wedding app?

And finally, you might consider dropping the invitations all together. I’m sure you have used Google Calendar or Facebook Events to invite your friends over for a BYOB party, why not do the same for your wedding? After all, it’s just a big party. 😉

Roleplay it!

The best wedding I have ever been to was also the geekiest wedding I have ever been to. My friends decided to have the whole wedding party dress up in costumes. We had some turn of the century costumes, some were pure steampunk, some were just silly… but everybody had a lot of fun!

The whole wedding was unusual: the wedding cake was cut with a katana, the tables were named after movies (Star Trek, Inglorious Basbards, Indiana Jones, etc.), the first dance was to a melody from Battlestar Galactica… The restaurant crew still remembers us and the wedding fondly, and they had fun with us there, too! 😀

Wedding Favours

It is customary to gift your wedding guests with a little token of your appreciation. People usually give the following items:

  • Lip balms;
  • Apothecary jars filled with candy;
  • Candles;
  • Sandalwood fans;
  • Pocket mirrors.

Offbeat bride, an amazing websites for brides that want a different wedding, suggest the following for a geeky wedding:

  • Custom dice;
  • Nintendo candies;
  • Space Invaders chocolates;
  • Lightsaber chocolates;
  • Binary… anything!

If you can afford it, you could always give your guests a personalized USB stick. If you want, you could fill it will several nice pictures of your wedding that your photographer will provide.

Make it yours!

A wedding should be the best and the biggest party of your life. But it is, ultimately, just a party. You don’t wanna have bridesmaids? You don’t need them. You would rather not throw the bouquet? Skip it. Talk to your significant other and be honest about what each of you wants and likes. Then brainstorm a little bit and see how it can be done.

Make the wedding yours, so that when someone remembers your wedding, they will know for sure who got married that day. Personalized such an occasion will make your memories and pictures more special, and the whole thing should be more fun to do than if you just followed a standard bridal magazine checklist.

Don’t forget the most important thing, though. Your wedding will last only one day, but a marriage should last a life time. So, while you are preparing the wedding, make sure you prepare for the marriage, too! 🙂
