How to set your own Facebook ‘URL’
Few years ago, creating username for Facebook page was more than popular. Everyone tried to be creative and original when it comes to creating them. I’ve seen all sorts of people coming up funny but also professional ones. Some of them were really original but honestly, some of them were just horrid. These days there is no more fuss about it, so let’s try and explain why and how you can make one, if you already haven’t.
How to register username for Facebook?
When you log in your account go under General Account Settings. Think about your nicknames or things that best describe you. Once you settle on your username and choose it, it will be the same as your address. For example:
Timeline: facebook.com/emily.
woods Email: emily.woods@facebook.com
After you initially choose your username it can only be changed once afterwards. Your friends will be able to see the email address on your timeline. If you don’t want anyone to see it, you can always choose the option Only You which makes it visible to no one. Facebook is strongly suggesting that username you opt for includes your real name. It should be easy to remember and as close to your public figure. Use only alphanumeric characters or periods and at least one letter. It won’t make a difference in search if you use capital letters or not. It will always bring friends on your page. As you can see it’s not so complicated after all. Your only task is to decide what username you will choose. You can have only one username per page. As changing it is limited, be careful and carefully think about it before making the decision. If it happens that you’ve maybe misspelled your username, here is a helpful tip how to correct it:
o From the top of your Page, click Edit Page
o Select Update Info
o Click Change username in the Username section
o Enter a new username and click Check Availability
o If the username you want is available, click Confirm to save it
Don’t forget, you can do this only once.
Why create username for Facebook?
If you want to promote your new business, brand or an organization creating a specific username will be more than helpful. It will contribute to public representation. Your Page address can and will be used in different marketing communications, websites and also business cards. If you are an official representative of a public figure or a business but your username is taken by some other person, report it. You are always allowed to make sure no one infringes your rights. If you are promoting your brand or a business, choose the username that will represent it in the most professional way.
I haven’t choosen my username but Facebook did it for me. Actually, I’m not sure what I think about it, but I guess it’s the same procedure as it was with the timeline. At least they won’t pick something strange or funny. They’ll just put the name that’s already representing you in public. Creating a username can make your life easier if you want to promote something. It can show you are professional and take things seriously. However, if your Facebook page is not representing anything you can give yourself some credit to create something original and creative. Who knows, maybe your funny username will make someone’s day better :).
