Eightbit.Me is 8-Bit Foursquare: Link Would Have Checked In Ganon’s Castle

3 min read,

Retro is cool, right? Most of you remember the good old days when video games didn’t have advanced graphics and video details, but still, we’ve played them for days, even months. Today, things are a bit different, many video games are more realistic than movies and once you finish them, there’s no way you’re going to play it again. Just remember how many times you’ve started with Super Mario to save the Princess!

Eightbit.Me is a free web location service which will take you back to the young days by being (almost) completely drawn in 8-bit style. If you get your friends to use it as well, you might have some fun with it and instead of checking into places with your Foursquare account, you might want to try Eightbit.Me which has, although 8-bit, some better ideas.

Player 1 vs. Player 2

To start using Eightbit.Me, you’ll have to create your character on the site. The only way to register and/or login into the Eightbit.Me is via your Twitter profile. You can customize everything on your character; their hair, facial hair, glasses, shirt, jacket, pants or shoes. Customize it any way you like and you’ll (probably) have a unique character. You can use this character for your Twitter or Facebook profile picture, but there’s more to Eightbit.Me than just pixellated, 8-bit avatar images.

Eightbit.Me is actually a location service, basically like Foursquare; you get to a place, check-in into it, let your friends know and get some points (in this case – coins) with which you can buy some extra items for your character. The store itself will be available soon, so make sure to collect as many coins as possible until then.

Eightbit.Me

However, there is no mobile application, just a mobile web version. Open up Eightbit.Me on your phone and add it to your home screen as a bookmark. Click on it and log in with your Twitter account; don’t worry, it won’t post anything without your permission.

Check-in Into Another Castle

Now that everything is set up, you can check-in into a nearby place. Find it in the list and write a note (shout) to your friends. Decide whether you’ll post this on Twitter or keep it for your 8-bit world only. If you connect your Eightbit.Me account with your Foursquare account, your check-ins will be saved to your Foursquare profile as well.

Collect the coins with check-ins!

After the check-in, you won’t see a leader board; your character will instead be placed in front of a building with actual name written on it. And this is the best part – when someone else checks in, their character will join yours! Much better way of showing “who’s here” then a simple list, right?

Points? Coins Are Way Cooler

You have to change your clothes, right? So does your character, although maybe not every day. To keep things fresh and to keep the coolness factor, you should change something on them every now and then. Stock t-shirts are cool, but there are some you’ll be able to buy as soon as the store opens.

You’ll be able to buy some great shirts soon!

You’ll pay for those shirts with coins, which you collect instead of points, as you check-in with your friends. So, get Eightbit.Me and start checking-in, retro style!
