Santa’s Guide To Why a Domain Makes a Great Last Minute Christmas Gift

You’re a busy, busy, busy person. While you actually want to spend days and even months planning to get the people in your life some truly special Christmas gifts, you end up waiting for the last possible second to think of what to get them. This year is no different. Thankfully, you can always get a unique gift – a domain name. Not convinced? Read on, let’s get you in the Christmas domaining spirit! Ho ho ho!
I personally didn’t think of domains as gifts for the longest time. Most children always asked me for toys or sweets, although during the past decade I’ve been hearing more and more about iPhones, Playstations… Domains are not something that I get in my letters but they are an amazing gift if you forgot to send me your letter or get something sweet for your loved ones by yourself.
First of all, don’t beat yourself up. You wouldn’t believe how busy I GET this time of year. I barely have time to visit Ms. Clause between rides!
Domains For Friends & Family
Why get a domain name for a friend or a member of your family? The reasons are quite simple so let’s list some if not all of them:
1. It’s inexpensive. If you’re on a budget, domains make a very cost-effective gift that’s still unbelievably…
2. …Unique. I doubt that others usually give the gift of a unique domain name for Christmas, right?
3. Everybody needs a home on the web. A website. While platforms like Facebook and Twitter offer profiles that you can populate with content about you, they depend on a 3rd party company. Your website and your domains are yours.
Domains For Business Partners & Clients
While a good bottle of wine and some branded goodies are expected as business gifts at the end of each year, they aren’t personal. Honestly, they aren’t personal at all, since their emphasis is… all… about… YOU… and your brand.
Would you brand the gifts you got your family with your name? I didn’t think so.
So… I’ll Get Something Unique
Yes, you’ll get the most unique, thoughtful gift for each and every one of your clients and business partners – next year. Remember, it’s 2 days until Christmas which means you have exactly… too little time. It took you just over 6 minutes to read this article up to this point. Yep, it’s too little time. While you’ll definitely plan out the unique gifts you’re getting them for Christmas 2016., let’s focus on this one first.
Because of the reasons we’ve already mentioned as well as the time we still have – you guessed it – domains make the perfect gift for your business partners and here’s why:
1. Branding talented team members is essential for companies that want to grow by showing how the best people work for them. Getting their employees unique domain names that they can use to start a website or blog and then tie it in with their company.
2. We mentioned how important it was to create a personalised gift. What’s more personalised then a domain name with your business partner’s name on it? It shows that you took the time to realise that their talent (hello, ego!) deserves a personal website!
3. What’s even better is that you don’t have to be overly creative or over-think the domain name. Just get the NameSurname.Me domain name that you want and that’s it. Simple.
4. As I mentioned, it’s inexpensive which means a lot if you have to buy gifts for dozens of business partners. Seriously, a great .ME domain will set you back just $7-10 back, which is far less than a good bottle of wine, but is far more unique.
How to ‘Gift’ a Domain Name
While domains aren’t as ubiquitous as some other gifts you might think of… Okay, so they aren’t at all seen as potential gifts which makes them very unique – it’s not hard to buy someone a domain for Christmas. What do you need to know?
1. Domain names are bought at websites such as GoDaddy and Namecheap, where you can ‘register’ domain names. Everything you have to do is register your desired .ME domain name at a register and it’s yours. While registering, you can already put the person you are giving the domain to as the owner.
2. After you ‘gift’ the domain, you can give them access to the account you used to register the domain to. You can even ‘transfer’ the domain to the account they create on the same platform for no extra charge!
3. When they have the domain name, they just need to direct it to a hosting or website creation service such as WordPress.com or Squarespace.
It’s that easy. If you’re still not sure how to ‘gift’ a domain name, ask any of your questions in the comments. But let’s move on…
How to ‘Package’ The Domain
While wine, cheese and ugly Christmas sweaters are an obvious and simple gift, they’re pretty easy to understand. Their physicality is an obvious way to actually give the gift to someone. How do you “give” a domain name, a virtual product? Here’s just 3 simple ideas:
1. A Handwritten Note that you managed to write although you haven’t used a pen for months, maybe years. It’s a personal message that explains why the person you are giving the gift to truly needs the domain, as well as why you are wishing them a Merry Christmas.
2. A 20-minute Tutorial from you, while you sip on mulled wine, on how to use the domain name you’ve gifted. This can be an awesome way to introduce your gift to parents and business partners. While your folks will appreciate spending as much time with you as possible and you’ll like the chance to teach the people that taught you everything, your business partners will like the fact you helped them improve their personal branding.
3. Print out the domain name on a nice piece of paper and find a cute little gift box that you can put it in. Wrap it up nicely and include the letter that we mentioned in 1).
Now you know not just why to get a domain name as a gift, but also how to register it and package it under your Christmas tree! Forget your worries and get as many .ME domains as you need to as special little gifts!
Love, Santa!
P.S. Who not to get a domain for?
Domainers – I hope the reason is obvious enough, but if it isn’t: The fact that someone makes a living buying and selling a lot of domains doesn’t mean that you need to get them another one. Seriously, they probably have 1000s of domains and won’t consider them such a unique gift.
