Clash of the Steve Jobs Movies

4 min read,

Ever since the death of Steve Jobs last year, people have been eager to learn more about the life and work of this the technological guru who changed the world with his products. Written by Walter Isaacson, a must read biography was published just months after his death. It soon became a bestseller on Amazon and still is the best way if you want an in depth look into the life of Steven Paul Jobs. We kindly recommend you read this book, but if you are one of those who is looking for a cinematic experience you haven’t had too many options until now.

Pirates of Silicon Valley

Pirates of the Silicon Valley by Martyn Burkewas is so far the only feature movie which depicts founding moments of Apple and its creator. Shot back in ’99 and starting Noah Wyle as Steve Jobs, it embarks us on a journey from the high school days of Jobs and his partner Steve Wozniak, throughout the college and hippie communes, all the way to the infamous fight between Jobs and Gates at Macworld.

For most of the time, the movie talks about the relationship between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. After their companies started working together in 1977., they had a successful run but at the end, their egos separated them from one another.

During the 95 minutes, the movie also shows a different side of Steve, an emotional, family side. It is little known that Steve had a daughter out of wedlock, Lisa, which was the name behind the Apple Lisa. Although Steve refused to admit that he was her father for quite some time, over the years he embraced her as his daughter and tried to be the father she never had in her childhood.

Jobs: Ashton Kutcher

The movie which got everybody’s attention is the one starting Ashton Kutcher, simply named – Jobs. Although we still don’t know too many details about this movie, we do know for a fact that it’s an independent production. The director of this hoping-to-be-blockbuster is Joshua Michael Stern, a not well-known director that has several movies behind him, Swing Vote being the most famous one.

As far as the cast goes it is already public and can be found on IMDB. As said, Kutcher will start as Jobs, while the part of his colleague Steve Wozniak is meant for Josh God. Some of the scenes will be shot in the original garage where he and Wozniak assembled the first Apple computer – Apple 1.

The movie should have a similar synopsis as Walter Isaacson’s biography about Jobs, but it will not be based on it. Jobs was originally supposed to hit theaters by the end of the year, but it was postponed due to production issues for the begging of 2013.

Due to obvious similarities, people have been very eager to see Kutcher as Jobs on the big screen

Sony’s Jobs: Aaron Sorkin

If there’s any movie that is talked as much as Ashton Kutcher’s Jobs, it’s the movie about founder of Apple that is being written by an award winning screenwriter and the director of The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin.

Although the movie was originally supposed to be based on Walter Isaacson’s biography about Steve Jobs, Aaron revealed in the interview for the Newsweek he gave about a week ago that he scratched that idea and started working on something completely different.

He revealed that the movie will consist out of three half an hour, live action pre-keynote scenes. Every scene will follow the 30 minutes before the launch of the three products that changed everybody’s lives – original Mac, NeXT and iPod.

Unfortunately we still do not know who will play the role of Steve Jobs in this movie. Sony Pictures, the company behind this movie is making sure that no rumor comes out of the studio. So far, we can only speculate who will play the leading role but we can assure you that it definitely won’t be Kutcher as he is already booked for the Jobs.

The two new movies which will hopefully hit theaters next year will bring a unique viewpoint to the life and work of the late Steve Jobs. Until then, you’re best of with the Pirates of Silicon Valley, but if along the way you decide to learn more about Steve Jobs, we kindly recommend reading the biography written by Walter Isaacson.
