Centriphone.Me Makes Your Phone Fly

One of the great universal truths about life is that it looks amazing in slow motion. Things exploding in slow motion? Awesome. Things colliding with other things in slow motion? Still awesome. Spinning a camera around yourself while recording slow motion video in HD? Yup, the next level of awesome. Allow us to present Centriphone, a project by Swiss skier Nicolas Vuignier, that aims to provide you with a way to spin your phone around you and create breathtaking videos.
But let’s start from the beginning. Nicolas is a skier and filmmaker who dedicated the last 2 years of his life to creating Centriphone, which is basically a mount for your camera or phone that allows you to spin it around yourself with ease while keeping your phone safe from harm. As Nicolas demonstrates in the video below, he has really put quite a bit of effort into making Centriphone look and feel as refined as it is today. He experimented with making the mount larger, making the wings bigger and all sorts of tricks until he found just the right way to let you spin your phone without a worry.
A Spaceship That Actually Flies
Centriphone consists of a case with small wings on the bottom in which you put your phone, a high-strength rubber band that keeps your phone in place and 3 thin but strong strings that keep the flight of your phone straight and safe. Even though there is word about the creation of an action camera mount, and it’s expected it will be available soon, Nicolas preferred to use his iPhone simply because the framerate of a GoPro camera didn’t provide him with the type of video he wanted.
Centriphone utilizes the 240fps camera feature on the newest iPhones, which allows you to record slow motion video without the need to use any complex software or hardware. You just tap a few buttons and you’re set. Once you mount your phone in the space shuttle that is Centriphone (no, really, it looks like a shuttle), you just secure it with provided tools, click record and start spinning that phone! We’d just like to suggest that you invest in a quality wide-angle lens for your phone so you can attach those and see a lot more of what’s happening when you record the video.
Spinning Phones, Looking Cool
It’s really up to you what you’re going to be doing whilst recording the video, but you can do all sorts of things that allow you to spin something with your arm, like running or skiing or something completely different. You’re both the director and the muscle behind the operation so you get to choose where, when and how you’re going to be spinning that phone.
But here’s the best part – it’s free. Completely and utterly free. You can buy the complete kit that includes the mounts and strings and rubber bands and everything, but you can also make it yourself if you have access to a 3D printer and other stuff. The project is yours to download and print out and also add any details you’d like; Nicolas won’t mind it at all.
You are even encouraged to do so, and there are numerous accounts of people making their own versions from household materials, and being creative with both the idea and realization. You could safely say that Centriphone.Me started a revolution in filming yourself in action scenes.
Make It At Home, And Then Make Art
It’s pretty amazing how breathtakingly simple this idea really is, and to know that it doesn’t take you anything else but a 3D-printed case, some rubber bands and some strings to make videos that look as amazing as the one Nicolas made is really a revelation. Of course, there’s really a lot of potential lurking beneath this idea, because it can truly revolutionize the way people tend to record themselves while doing cool stuff. Because it is virtually free and not at all complicated, we’re itching to find out some more situations in where this new tech can be used.
