Appception: A Mobile Web App for Making Apps

3 min read,

There is an app for just about anything, so there should be an app for making apps, a masterpiece of appception. Frédérick Tubiermont and Alexandru Petrisor set out to make this meta-application about a year and a half ago, and as they dabbled with web technologies like html5 inside a mobile browser, they developed a mobile web app. I know what you are thinking: how many apps could a web app app make if a web app app would make apps?

Their goal was to make a mobile web app with such a good UX that it could easily be confused with a native one. It should have the fluidity of a native app, work on both iOS6 and Android4.1 platforms, and satisfy even the most demanding users. Oh, they also wanted to end app stores. No small challenge for Adsy.me.

The first crossplatform web app was released on April 16th 2014, with a simple-to-use content creator and a social network to go along with it, where users could follow each other, like & comments apps. Three weeks after launch it had already reached 2,000 registered users- a cinema from Puerto Rico used it to share their programme and trailers from Youtube, parents created apps about their kids activities, an irish Hockey Club recruited their new members over it, NFL fans were highlighting the best players of the league.

The apps can be made by pros and people with no experience at all, and they are easily distributed without the middle man- the app store. Frédérick and Alexandru believe this to be a step forward toward a new appstoreless era envisioned by Evernote’s Phil Libin, and they made their credo #noappstores.

Time To Create Your First App?

Even if you are not a believer in an appstore-free world, you can have a go at the app just for the fun of it and skip the philosophy. Here are a few reasons to try it out:

1. It’s not a native app but it feels like native, it is HTML5  polished and ready to go mainstream, and not another half-baked geeky experiment, clame its creators, although we at .ME personally like geeky experiments!

2. The output format is optimized for smartphones but both the maker & viewer are truly cross-platform, working on iOS/android smartphones/tablets & on PC , with the same UI across all the platforms

3. It’s not only a content creation tool, but also a social network in its own right, where adsy apps are distributed, liked, commented, and it is open to third-party developers

4. It’s not abusiness-oriented mobile app maker, it’s a content creation & sharing tool aimed at a general audience, and is as suited for kids as it is for small business owners  who want to craft a quick mobile presence for their store.

5. It’s simple, fun and free to use, and will probably remain so

Try it out and see what kind of an app you can make.
